What If the Ultimate Career Upgrade Is Hiring No One?

What if scaling your headcount isn't the ultimate career goal? Here is how transitioning to a Fractional CMO model and reading Paul Jarvis’s Company of One proved that staying intentionally lean can be the ultimate upgrade.

Leading a full internal sales and marketing department taught me a ton, but it definitely took a specific skill set. In a typical corporate setup, leadership is mostly about aligning teams, navigating office dynamics, and managing the human side of big organizations. When I jumped into working as a Fractional CMO, my day-to-day completely shifted. Instead of dealing with operational management, I got to focus purely on strategy and execution: dropping in, finding the core challenge, building the solution, and implementing it right alongside business owners.

That hands-on experience is why Company of One by Paul Jarvis hit such a strong chord with me. The book poses a radical question: what if staying small isn't a stepping stone, but the end goal? Keeping an operation intentionally lean allows you to channel 100% of your energy into honing your craft and solving high-impact problems, rather than building an organizational chart.

Finding your true business north comes down to a conscious personal choice: owning a business doesn't mean you are obligated to endlessly expand your headcount. For many, the real career upgrade is buying back time autonomy. It looks like putting in four hyper-focused hours of high-value work, then having the flexibility to pick up the kids, try a new sport, or recharge—without feeling forced to hire extra personnel just to look like a bigger operation.

This mindset also simplifies how you approach client relationships. You don't need a massive roster of accounts to build a thriving business. Instead of trying to serve everyone, you can focus on building deep, collaborative partnerships with a select group of clients whose goals and values genuinely align with your own.

At the end of the day, scaling a large corporate team is a fantastic path for those who love organizational building. But choosing not to hire—and scaling your business model specifically to support the life you want to live—is a big win for me.
